Get ready to embark on a 7-day journey that will take you from the vibrant streets of Willemstad to the serene, turquoise waters of our most secluded beaches. This itinerary is crafted with families in mind, balancing thrilling activities with plenty of time for relaxation. So pack your bags, and let's dive into a week of unforgettable memories on our dushi Kòrsou (sweet Curaçao).
Day 1: Arrival and Willemstad's Colorful Welcome
Welcome to Curaçao! After landing at Hato International Airport (CUR), pick up your rental car – a must for exploring the island at your own pace. Settle into your accommodation and then head straight to Willemstad, our island's capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Your first stop: the Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge. Watch as this "swinging old lady" opens to let ships pass. Afterwards, wander through the colorful streets of Punda and Otrobanda, the two districts connected by the bridge. The distinct colonial architecture, painted in a rainbow of hues, is a photographer's dream. For dinner, we recommend the Plasa Bieu (Old Market), where you can savor authentic Curaçaoan cuisine like karni stobá (beef stew) and piska fresku (fresh fish) in a casual, communal setting. Day 2: Beach Hopping in Westpunt
Today is all about sun, sand, and sea turtles! Westpunt, the westernmost point of the island, is home to some of Curaçao’s most stunning beaches. Start your day at Grote Knip (Kenepa Grandi), a postcard-perfect beach with brilliant turquoise water and soft white sand. It’s a great spot for swimming and snorkeling. Arrive early to claim a shady spot under a manchineel tree.
In the afternoon, head to Playa Piskado (Playa Grandi), where you’re almost guaranteed to swim with sea turtles. Local fishermen clean their catch here, and the turtles flock to the area for an easy meal. This up-close encounter with marine life is a magical experience for all ages. Remember to keep a respectful distance and never touch the turtles. For a late lunch, stop by a local sneki (roadside snack bar) for a refreshing batido (fruit smoothie).
Day 3: Underwater Wonders and Hato Caves
Time to explore the world beneath the waves! Curaçao is renowned for its incredible snorkeling and diving opportunities. If your family is new to snorkeling, the Tugboat at Caracasbaai is an excellent starting point. This sunken tugboat is just a short swim from the shore and is teeming with colorful fish. The calm, shallow water makes it ideal for kids.
In the afternoon, venture to the Hato Caves, a network of limestone caves formed below sea level millions of years ago. A guided tour will lead you through chambers adorned with stalactites and stalagmites, and you’ll learn about the cave’s history, from its geological formation to its use as a shelter for escaped slaves. Don't forget to look for the colony of long-nose fruit bats! This is a great way to escape the midday sun and add a touch of adventure to your day.
Day 4: A Day of Culture and Art
Immerse yourselves in Curaçao's rich culture and vibrant art scene. Start your day in the Scharloo neighborhood of Willemstad, known for its stunning street art. Go on a self-guided walking tour to discover colorful murals that tell the story of our island’s history and folklore.
In the afternoon, visit Serena's Art Factory to see the famous ChiChi dolls, handcrafted sculptures that represent the vibrant, strong, and caring older sister. You can even participate in a workshop and paint your own ChiChi doll – a wonderful and personal souvenir to take home. Day 5: Klein Curaçao Adventure
Get ready for a day trip to Klein Curaçao (Little Curaçao), a small, uninhabited island off the coast of Curaçao. This is an all-day excursion, typically starting early in the morning and returning in the late afternoon. Several tour operators offer trips to the island, which usually include breakfast, lunch, and an open bar.
Once you arrive on Klein Curaçao, you'll be greeted by a pristine white-sand beach and crystal-clear water. Spend the day swimming, snorkeling, and simply relaxing on the beach. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the island’s historic lighthouse and the shipwreck on the windward side. Klein Curaçao is also a nesting ground for sea turtles, so keep your eyes peeled for these magnificent creatures.
Day 6: Shete Boka National Park and a Flamingo Farewell
Today is all about natural wonders. Head to Shete Boka National Park, a dramatic stretch of coastline where the powerful waves of the Caribbean Sea crash against the shore. The park has several "bokas" (inlets), each with its own unique character. The most famous is Boka Tabla, where you can watch the waves roll into an underground cavern.
